Thomas Wolfe Memorial
The Thomas Wolfe House
Considered by many to be one of the giants of 20th-century American literature, Thomas Wolfe immortalized his childhood home in his epic autobiographical novel, Look Homeward, Angel. Wolfe’s colorful portrayal of his family, his hometown of “Altamont” Asheville, North Carolina, and “Dixieland” the Old Kentucky Home boardinghouse, earned the Victorian period house a place as one of American literature’s most famous landmarks.

Colburn Earth Science Museum
Colburn Earth Science Museum
The Colburn Earth Science Museum is the legacy of engineer and bank president Burnham Standish Colburn, who retired in the 1920s to Biltmore Forest near Asheville. Colburn moved to the area to be close to Western North Carolina’s rich mineral fields and the diverse specimens they held. In 1931, Burnham S. Colburn and his brother, William B. Colburn, helped found the Southern Appalachian Mineral Society. The club continues today to hold monthly meetings, regular field trips and other educational and social activities. During his lifetime, Burnham S. Colburn amassed a significant collection of North Carolina minerals, including the world’s largest collection of hiddenite, a rare variety of the mineral spodumene discovered in Alexander County, North Carolina in 1879.

Antique Tobacco Barn
There is no place quite like the Antique Tobacco Barn in Asheville. It’s everyone’s favorite eclectic shopping experience and has repeatedly been voted best place to buy antiques in Western North Carolina. Featuring 77,000 square feet of filled up space and over 75 dealers who have a different take on what is wonderful, there’s something for everyone, whether you have a lot to spend or not. Back in the day, the building held tobacco auctions seasonally while selling antiques year-round, but after the 2004 floods, roughly two football fields of merchandise were 6 feet under water. After a miraculous recovery, Antique Tobacco Barn is back and better than ever with a gigantic selection of antiques at fair prices.

Brevard Music Center
Brevard Music Center
Brevard Music Center is, at once, a place, a summer institute, and a festival. The Music Center is situated on a wooded 180-acre campus in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. Founded in 1936, the Music Center has matured into one of this country's premier summer training programs and festivals. More than 400 gifted students, ages 14 through post-college, come to the Music Center to study with members of a distinguished artist faculty and with renowned guest artists. For seven weeks, students participate in a vigorous program of instruction that includes ensembles, private lessons, and chamber music. Brevard's hallmark is the powerful sense of community that re-emerges every June, as faculty and students work together to present more than 80 concerts to the public. The total audience each summer numbers more than 30,000. For decades the Brevard Music Center has inspired devotion not only among its students and faculty but also among its listeners and among a vast corps of volunteers. That hundreds of persons have purchased homes in western North Carolina expressly to be near the Brevard Music Center gives some measure of the Center's significance to its community.

Blue Ridge Parkway
Blue Ridge Parkway
Celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2010, the Blue Ridge Parkway is a product of the New Deal’s efforts to provide jobs to the unemployed of the Great Depression. Construction began in September 1935 at Cumberland Knob near the North Carolina and Virginia state line. The idea was to create a link between the Shenandoah National Park to the edge of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Completed in 1983, the Parkway’s history has been highlighted by documentarian Ken Burns in the six-part “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea” series originally aired on PBS.

Dupont State Forest
DuPont State Forest
The DuPont State Forest is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains between Hendersonville and Brevard, North Carolina. Its 10,400 acres of forest feature four major waterfalls on the Little River and several on the Grassy Creek. The original 7600 acre forest was established in 1996 through a generous bargain sale from the DuPont Corporation. In 2000, the Forest was expanded by two property additions, including the spectacular 2200 acre tract in the center of the Forest containing High Falls, Triple Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls. The DuPont State Forest lies in an upland plateau of the Little River valley, with large sections of gently rolling land bordered by moderately steep hills and mountains. Most all of the ridges have exposed granite slabs and domes. Elevation ranges from 2300' below Hooker Falls on the Little River to 3600' on the granite dome of Stone Mountain. Except for 21 small wildlife clearings, hundreds of acres of exposed granite, and a former camp facility on Lake Julia, t

It is also home of the first school of forestry in the United States, now preserved at the Cradle of Forestry in America historic site, and boasts two of the first designated wilderness areas in the east. The Pisgah, Grandfather and Appalachian Ranger Districts are scattered along the eastern edge of the mountains of western North Carolina and offer visitors a variety of opportunities for outdoor recreation and enjoying the natural beauty of the mountains.

Grandfather Mountain
Grandfather Mountain
Grandfather Mountain and its rocks reveal a long history of rock formation and mountain-building that dates back to 1.1 billion years ago. Today the mountain you see is the end product of two things: the mountain-building that culminated 300 million years ago, and the erosion that has been ongoing for over 100 million years and continues today. The original Cherokee name for the mountain was “Tanawha,” meaning “a fabulous hawk or eagle.” It was named “Grandfather” by pioneers who recognized the face of an old man in one of the cliffs. Many vantage points reveal different faces, so there is no one official profile of the mountain, but the most popular can be seen from the community of Foscoe, seven miles north of Linville and 10 miles south of Boone on N.C. 105.

In the decades since then, the river has seen it all: tens of millions of visitors and smiles. Every year since its founding, NOC has strived to share the wonders of this place, and all the places we raft, hike, pedal and paddle.

Linville Caverns
Linville Caverns
Located at the southern gateway to western NC's High Country region, Linville Caverns is an ideal destination for visitors of all ages. The beauty of our mountains is echoed within Humpback Mountain and visitors are invited to explore the splendor and wonders nature created "inside a mountain". For centuries, the marvels of Linville Caverns were unknown to man. In the early 1800's a fishing expedition headed by Henry E. Colton, of eastern NC, were astounded to see fish swimming in and out of what appeared to be rather solid rock. A small opening in the mountainous terrain allowed them to enter the subterranean recess that is still home to native trout in an underground stream. Colton, who later served as the state geologist of Tennessee, wrote of his exploration in an 1858 issue of NC Presbyterian, "...now began the wondrous splendors of the hidden world...we emerged into an immense passage, whose roof was far beyond the reach of the glare of our torches, except where the fantastic festoons of stalactites hang down within our touch. It looked like the arch of some grand old cathedral, yet it was too sublime, too perfect in all its beautiful proportions, to be anything of human, but a model which man might attempt to imitate. It was not a large, gross cavern,...pendants were of a delicate lightness, and a most beautiful hue..."

Chai Pani
Chai Pani
Chai Pani literally means “tea and water”. It's slang in India for going out for a cup of tea, a tasty bite, a snack, or “a little something”. Well in Downtown Asheville it's slang for innovative, fun, affordable & delicious Indian cuisine. We'd go so far as to say it's “mindblasting”. Some of the most tasty, fun and affordable food of any country is it's street food and Chai Pani features chaat - crunchy, spicy, sweet, tangy, brightly flavored Indian street snacks. And since there is nothing more comforting and delicious in any culture than a home cooked meal, Chai Pani also brings you thalis - traditional family meals highlighting India's amazing culinary diversity.

Wicked Weed Brewing
Wicked Weed Brewing
King Henry VIII declared hops “A wicked and pernicious weed” destined to ruin beer. Independent brewers were driven by their rebel integrity to defy the king, embrace the hop and create beer for the untamed palate. Today, rebel integrity drives our defiant beer. At Wicked Weed Brewing we craft big-flavor, hop-forward beers that push our creative boundaries. We believe in the wildness of beer, its’ nonconformist attitude, its’ ability to resist being tamed. To those who do not conform and will not be tamed, we raise a pint to you and ask that you join the rebellion. Cheers!

Jack of the Wood
Jack of the Wood
Jack of the Wood is a cozy Celtic style pub located in vibrant downtown Asheville, NC. Since opening our doors in 1996 we’ve been one of Asheville’s favorite places to come and relax, listen to music, and enjoy fresh, locally sourced pub fare. We’re the original home of Green Man Brewing, specializing in hand crafted English ales. Sit back and hear the fiddlers play at one of our informal acoustic jam sessions while enjoying our charming old world atmosphere and a pint of one of our classic ales. On a typical evening at Jack’s you’ll find many of the patrons gathered around the black walnut bar or at long wooden tables engaged in conversation. Others play darts or scan the papers while sipping a pint or munching on a plate of fish and chips. When local musicians are fiddling away on Irish reels or picking some old time mountain music in the corner, you can blink your eyes and imagine yourself in the Celtic Isles or an early American tavern. A wonderful bunch of people call Jack’s their local pub but are not opposed to sharing. Hope to see you soon! Pub Hours: Monday – Thursday 3pm till 1am, Friday -Sunday noon till 2am
